My paintings are informed by the different identities cities take on over a period of time.
I am interested in how different societies transform and change city spaces over the course of the centuries. My work examines the relationships between people and cities by responding to constant change, reconstruction and restoration in the urban landscape.
Decay, erasure, covering, revealing and rebuilding take place at the same time and are part of my painting practice. I see my process of covering as a metaphor of forgetting and suppressing the past. The process of revealing and sanding the surface down alludes to a process of remembering.

Vancouver Poetry Crawl Rules!

What a day.  I couldn’t make all the events, but those that I did were, without exception, very talented folks.  Geoff Nilson read from his new chapbook We Have to Look, Shannon Rayne read several published pieces, Elee Kraljii Gardiner read from her brand-spankin new book, Serpentine Loop (out now from Anvil), and Jennifer Zilm read from her new book Waiting Room (BookThug).  We were also treated to new poems from Leah Horlick, and Cecily Nicholson took over Artspeak with her phenomenal poems and voice.  Already looking forward to next year, and hoping that organizer Kevin Spenst is doing well after a health scare…

Fresh, local poetry!

Join Renee Saklikar and Kevin Spenst at Trout Lake now till 2pm for this! Such a great idea:

Starting in September 2015 the Vancouver Park Board and the Vancouver Public Library invite residents of Vancouver to participate in the Poetry in Parks project “Fresh Local Poetry” where Professional free-range poets will create poetry with participants in our parks. The Poetry created will be inspired by nature, food, urban farming or by participants’ memories of a favorite or moving outdoor experience and there will also be the opportunity for participants to read their poetry out loud or have the poet read the poem written for them!
